Education & Training on the Internet
guide to online resources for students and tutors
This compilation is a must-have for anybody in the business of writing or running online education and training courses. It will appeal in particular to those in further and higher education who are currently under pressure to deliver more online education.
It starts off with the basics of how to access the Net, what facilities it offers, and how these are related to education and training. This is followed by listings of schools and colleges on the Internet, as well as organisations who provide courses and information. The higher education section is the heart of the book - an in-depth listing of institutions offering online courses - from universities in the UK, to others in Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and the US.
Mixed in amongst all this, there are details of government portals, such as the National Grid for Learning, the Department for Education and Employment, and the Higher Education Funding Council. Some of these sites offer not much more than bland and pious policy statements - but the best of them provide rich listings of further sources. This makes the guide a good reference book for anybody who works in this field.
There are two sections on vocational and occupational sites. Laurel Alexander makes the point that the service sector is predicted to grow, but must deliver training on a more flexible basis. This means more online courses. The same is true of 'adult education' - which is traditionally the route back into employment and further education for people who have had a break from formal education.
This leads naturally into distance and online learning sites - from the Open University (UK) which is a pioneer of electronic education, to e-Colleges (US) which provides the technology and services which enable institutions to offer an online learning environment. He ends with a chapter which describes how to develop your own education and training site - with some useful tips on how to keep the user interested.
